Coach, this only proves that this is a classic case of Paul Bunyan"itis", how legendary stories grow over time. If a 190 pound all-american gets beat by a 137 pounder then call the men in white coats and lock the TJ X man up forever. I dont know about you as a wrestler, but let me tell you something, if a guy who weighs nearly 60 pounds less than you can beat you, you stink, period or you are a mental case against that particular guy. I wrestled Div I at 134 pounds back in the late 80s, early 90s and wrestled the likes of Joey Gilbert, Tom and Terry Brands, Bob Truby, and Alan Fried in competition so I am speaking from a stance of experience in this sport. That nonsense simply doesnt happen. Former great Sergei Beloglasov, certainly on the same level as Dan Gable, moved up 1 lousy weight class some years back and got manhandled by John Smith. Are you going to tell me that Beloglasov could have beaten say Bruce Baumgartner??? Are you insane??? That type of stuff simply doesnt happen. I am not calling Carl Adams a liar, I am simply saying he probably saw Gable take Peterson down after Peterson was exhausted after pounding Gable for an hour then ran out to the world and told everybody Gable could beat Peterson.

All that needs to be said about the uninformed comments; 150-Carl Adams (5th 1969, 1970 seeded 3 DNP, Champion 1971/1972), 158 Dave Martin (2nd 1969, Champion 1970), 167-Jason Smith (Champion 1969/1970), 177-Chuck Jean (Champion 1969/1970).
190-Ben Peterson (4th 1970, Champion 1971,1972)
- PATHETIC upper weights????

I agree TJ X although I wouldnt use the same harshness. I do believe this is how legends are born. This is the classic case of the man who pulls the infant out of the baby carriage before a faulty wheel breaks off thus saving the child from a bumpy ride...then by the end of the week, the story has morphed into the man tore through the wreckage of a downed Boeing 747 amid jet fuel and fire to rescue 100 screaming infants before dying of smoke inhalation. It is human nature to exagerrate stories over time. I do believe Mr. Adams is telling his version of the truth but you are also right TJ X in that if this was true, I would say it tells a lot about how bad the rest of ISU's big men must have been being that a 250 pound heavyweight gets beaten up by a 137 pound pipsqueek, wow.

I think a 137 pounder (Gable) beating on the entire Iowa State daily team tells you more about how pathetic the upper weights of ISU were rather than how amazing Dan Gable was. This is the classic case of Paul Bunyan'itis". I watched Larry Owings run up double digit points on him to take away his chance at finishing undefeated. Defeated by Leroy Kemp several times. I have read the following which is not generally known: Bobby Douglas defeated Gable 6 times in one day during the world team trials, etc...So please take all this Paul Bunyan talk for what it's worth. Gable was defeated and on some occasions, hammered as in the case of Bobby Douglas who was literally cheated out of the world team spot bc of his race, go research it. A 137 pounder defeating the entire team and all that nonsense is like saying Gallick would beat everybody in the room including cael Sanderson in his day, oh ok. If he did, I would say Sanderson sucks more than Gallick is God. I hear this type of nonsense all the time about Gable, what a joke.
